We’ve launched our website!

We won’t be updating this blog any more but you can find a wealth of information about grandparenting at BeGrand.net along with a community of grandparents talking about the issues that matter to them.  You can also get access to our online advisers who can deal with problems confidentially, 1-to-1. And you can get in touch with us and tell us what you think about the site – we’d love to know….

Thanks for sticking with us this far! We hope you like the new site.

Hello – it’s Sophie again. This time, I’m on the look out for a grandparent in the London-ish area doing the school run or minding their grandchild/ children.

We’re doing a news piece – (we’ll explain why later this weekend…..) about the important role grandparents play in children’s lives. But we need to find a grandparent who can be filmed this Monday morning, the 25th Jan. If you’d like to find out more – no obligation to take part – contact me on sophie.theunissen@begrand.net and I’ll tell you a bit more. (Oh yes, I will be checking my email all weekend!)

We’ve got another request for internet-active-grandparents…

The Department of Children, Schools and Families are looking for grandparentswho used the internet to resolve problems & issues to tell their stories for a short film.

They need to be stories directly related to grandparenting – it could be finding help and advice to deal with specific problems, discovering ways of keeping in touch with grandchildren, advice on working as a team with with parents – or just finding friends online who know how you feel and help you cope .  They’re part of a series of short films that will inspire grandparents, amongst others, to get online.

If you’re interested in being involved please contact  janeshackleton@wilderfilms.co.uk or give her a call on on 020 7631 3417.

There’s no commitment to being involved at this stage – she can explain more about it and find out if you’re interested.  They’re filming between the 6th and 9th January – so you’d need to be available sometime then.  As ever the way, they’d prefer someone in London/ the South East – but are interested in stories from all over.  And looking out the window at the falling snow right now, who can blame them!

It’s that time of year – no, not Christmas, the BeGrand.net launch.
While the rest of the world thinks about slowing down for a few days, we will be working overtime to launch our new site early in 2010.
Keep talking to us and let us know what we can do for you.
Until then, Merry Christmas

Squeeze in grandma!

December 7, 2009

I have just picked up on some comments from David Cameron made at the Gingerbread annual conference (Gingerbread is the organisation for single parent families – its website is http://www.gingerbread.org.uk ).
He said society was ignoring the role of extended families and that houses and flats were often being built too small for people to enjoy [...]

Nothing like a persona experience

December 7, 2009

Finding out about something first hand is the best way to see the value in it.
That is what I have always thought, and my belief was held up last week when I had to call on my mum and the in-laws for some emergency babysitting due to a sick son.
Now, I know as much as [...]

A marketing nightmare – a forgotten brand!

November 25, 2009

We’re part of the PKH project.  Unless you’re involved in it, you’ve probably never heard of it – though it’s a range of major, national projects using innovative, often digital ways to support hundreds of thousands of parents & families, run through the DCSF.
Every few months, the PKH partners get together to talk through shared issues. [...]

I’m going to be controversial now

November 16, 2009

I have just come back from a nice week in the USA, visiting San Fransisco and the gambling hell they call Las Vegas.
Now, when I managed to wrestle myself away from the slot machines and dancing girls, I had a good look at the locals and how they interact -sort of like a modern day [...]

Grandparents Share Views at First BeGrand Advisory Board Meeting

November 10, 2009

Grandmothers, grandmothers and representatives of support agencies met together in London for the first meeting of the BeGrand Advisory Board.
The meeting saw some lively debate – particularly around the need for the service to both promote the fun side of grandparenting and provide support on topics such as contact or kinship share. The group also put forward [...]

N&P job now closed

November 9, 2009

Thanks very much to everyone who applied for the Networks and Partnerships position.  Applications are now closed.
I don’t want to sound like someone from Eurovision, but we’ve had some really interesting entries.   I’ll come back to all of you who applied within the week.
We’ve also got the grandfathers we need for the Advisory [...]
